Tactics

Today in football Tactics can give your team the edge and enable you to win the game. Master tacticians such as: Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho have used their tactics as a major part of the game not the players you have/ bought.
Tactics such as:

4-4-2 was the most common tactic in older English teams it had the perfect blend of defence and offence with 4 defenders defending and at least 3 midfielders and the 2 strikers attacking with one of the midfielders hanging back in case of a counter attack.
But now in football with the teams playing 4-4-2 the right and left backs would over lap the wingers giving width. This tactic is popular with lower league clubs.

4-3-3 Gives a bit more attacking mentality to your team and therefore hopefully more goals. With this tactics the midfielders will stay central with the left and right strikers
Going wide and then all 3 midfielders attack. This Tactic can be venerable to a counter attack if your defence isn’t strong.
This Tactic is a very good tactic to counter attack on when the team is defending the wide wingers and striker stay up with the two central midfielders coming up to support with the defensive midfielder defending. And this is my favourite tactic because it’s the perfect blend of defence and attack but it does depend on the players you have. Teams such as; Swansea and Barcelona play this tactic.

There is also one other popular tactic which is one of the newst in football and very effective. With this Tactic you will always have 5 in defence ( 4 defenders and 1 defensive midfielder) And have 5 attackers ( 4 midfielders and 1 striker).

This Tactic is also good on the counter attack with the deeper defensive midfeilder or one of the defenders getting the ball to either a winger or a center midfielder. You would need Fast wingers to make this tactic effective. One team which play this tactic is Arsenal.

Strategies

Managers also use strategies such as:
General attacking = General attacking is just attacking in a normal fashion which can include the 4 points below.

  1. Counter attack = When you attack quickly after the other team has attacked and having more or as many attackers as the opposition defenders. For this strategy it will be vital to have fast players. This is very effective and can get a lot of goals for your team. A perfect example of this is Arsenal.

  1. Long Ball = When your defending and want a quick way out this can be a very good option. Getting the ball high and far away from the goal to your striker or target man. It will help if you have a tall fast target man. A god example of this is Bolton who just hit it away to there striker

  1. Wing Play = Wing play consists of using your wingers to run up the wing and cross into the box for your strikers. You will need fast and skilful wingers to carry the ball up the line. A good example of this is Real Madrid who uses their wingers De Maria and Ronaldo but Ronaldo sometimes acts as an inside forward.

  1. Possession = Possession consists of keeping the ball and passing it around and hoping for a clearing for the final pass. To be good at possession you need intelligent players who move and are good at giving and receiving passes. The Perfect example of this is Barcelona who has just played this way and has been said by some football Pundits to be one of the best teams ever.

General defending = There are
  1. Marking.
-         Man Marking = Man Marking is when you mark your man maybe a dangerous player on the opposing team or just in set plays.
-         Zonal Marking = this is when you mark an area or a player in a certain area. But some players are dangerous when they have time from the amount of space there given.

  1. Closing Down = When an opposing player has the ball you close them down and tackle or just pressure them and some players don’t like the pressure and panic and make a mistake

  1. Off Side Trap = This is used by nearly every defence when trying to catch a striker off side by stepping up in a line and hopefully catching the striker off but this can go very wrong and this can give the striker more time and space and is through on goal.

Positions requirements

Different positions need different requirements for there purpose in that position such as:

Goalkeeper

Ideally a keeper should be Tall and Agile and have Good hand eye co-ordination. But of course there are short keepers who make up for their height by being a high jumper. The requirements a keeper needs are the following:
·        Aerial ability, communication with his defenders and control of his box
·        Handling and has to be able to not concede in a one-on-one situations
·        Quick reflexes and Agility
·        Composure and Concentration
·        Has to make the right decisions and positioning

A goalkeeper who shows these qualities is Real Madrid Keeper Iker Casillas

Defence

        Central Defender

·        Heading the ball, Marking and Tackling
·        Composure, Concentration, Making good decisions
·        Determination and Positioning
·        Jumping and Strength

A central defender who shows this is Barcelona Center back Gerrad Pique

                 Wing Back / Full Back

A full back needs to be strong and quick and has to have a lot of stamina. The requirements for a full back are the following:
·        Crossing, marking and tackling
·        Anticipation, concentration and Positioning
·        Team work and work rate
·        Acceleration and Stamina

A full back who shows these qualities is Arsensal Full back Gael Clichy

Midfield

                   Central Midfielder
A central Midfielder has to be intelligent and focused. To be an all round midfielder you have to be ok at defence and offence but they fit in the middle and join the both together. The requirements for a central midfielder are the following:
·        First touch, Marking, Passing and tackling
·        Decisions, Determination and positioning
·        Team work, work rate and stamina

A Central who shows these qualities in the premier league is Chelsea Player Micheal Essien

                     A Playmaker

It says it in the name, a playmaker is the player, which the team all revolve round this is normally a central midfielder or a deeper striker and these are the requirement for a playmaker:
·        Dribbling, First touch, Passing and technique
·        Anticipation, Decisions and Creativity
·        Flair (skill), Team work, Work rate and Stamina

A Playmaker who shows all these qualities is Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas

                   Winger

A winger can be classed as another striker and need to be fast, agile, and have a lot of stamina. The requirements needed for a winger are the following:
·        Crossing, Dribbling and Technique
·        Decisions, Flair and agility
·        Acceleration, Balance and pace

The Player who shows these qualities is Barcelona's Lional Messi

Striker

               Striker/ Target man

A striker is someone who should be short and quick or tall and strong the best partnerships come from a sticker the small, quick player feeding the tall ‘target man’ and vice versa and the smaller one becomes a ‘Target man’. But if there is a lone striker he gets fed by the midfielders. The requirements for a striker are the following:
·        Finishing, First touch and (if taller) Heading (if shorter) Longer shots
·        Anticipation, Bravery, Determination
·        Jumping, Strength and pace
·        Team work, Work rate

A player who shows all these qualities and is a great target man is Chelsea's Didier Drogba

Football has evolved rapidly since its beginning and now is a multibillion pound sport in gambling and fees for players and there wages. And the variety of different tactics, strategies and how they fit a team or player makes this game very exciting.

Unit 2 assignment 5
Assessing the rules and regulations
Football
Football’s scoring system is simple; you kick the ball into the back of the opposition’s goal. Then why has this created such a problem with goals that should have been counted and others that shouldn’t have counted. And one way to resolve this problem is something called goal line technology. Goal line technology has been going around for a while and for a number of years has been turned down by FIFA.
One thing that sparked goal line technology was Frank Lampard’s goal against Germany in the FIFA World cup in South Africa 2010 when it did cross the line but the referee did not see the incident.

This was when Germany was 2-1 up when this happened and if the goal counted it would have made the score 2-2 and possibly making England go on and win that match. In the end Germany won 4-2. This sparked fury with England supporters.

But what the England supporters probably don’t remember is that this believably helped England win the world cup in 1966.

What do I think?
I think that it would be really good to have it, Football is a growing sport and sports like rugby have already brought in something similar. But also I think it ruin football just a little and it would be quite hard to enforce this in every division in the world especially the lower leagues. But even a 5th official who stands on the by line and looks if the ball crosses the line and even if a player fouls opposition in the box to give a penalty. This is a really good idea and is already in the UEFA league and personally I think it should be distributed around at least the main leagues around the world. This would make the job for referees a lot easier.
Of course there’s good and bad for everything and people think that it’s not natural. It would not show as much sportsmanship from the players.

One rule I also think that should be put into football is that when players crowd the referee for a decision then they should be sent off no arguments, when the referee makes a decision he will not change it and for players to do that also sets a bad example on the children watching. They look at footballers as their idols and they act that way as well. Personally I think; just the captain of each team, the offender and the offended then it would be a calmer environment.

Review

Overall I think Phil Jagielka played very well even though conceding 2 goals, both of which was not his fault. He played very solidly making key interceptions which broke up Newcastle’s rhytmn. He also was commading in the air were he won all of his headers. Jagielka also had an 100% tackle rate, and he rarely lost his man.

Passing/ receiving the ball- 8
Comment= Lost ball when trying the long ball up the middle, But showed a good first touch when receiving the ball.
In the game everton past it along the back four and waited to make the long ball up-field. Everytime Jagielka received the ball he put it out infront of him so he could play another pass. But ocasionly he did a long ball up to the striker, Saha and sometimes his passes went just beyond the striker losing Everton the possesion.

Dribbling – 4
Comment= He took the ball forward and had 1 good run but never looked dangerous.
As a centerback he never needed to run forward, and so on the training ground they would focus more on tackling and marking etc. In his only run in the game he played a 1 -2 with the rightback who played him up the right. Jagielka then took the ball himself and run up the right, It was obviuos he was comfortable dribbling the ball as more attacking players were.

Headering- 9
Comment=  Was commanding in the air and won every header he could.
As a center back he was coomading in the air, he intercepted balls left, right and center headering the ball with one of the headers making a good counter attack for his team. He was also closly watched in the opposition’s area when going up for corner always havingsomone marking him.
Marking- 9
Comment= He rarly lost his man.
He was expional in defence, making life difficult for the forwards by never losing his man. This made it very hard for Newcastle to make succesful attacks. With the runners not being able to get through succesfully.

Passing/Receiving-7
Comment= Whenever I passed the ball it went to the player but sometimes it went to the other team
In the game i was good at passing, i was better at short passing rather than longer passes.Although a couple of times i made opportunities for my team by doing a long pass up field.I think i did quite well receiving the ball. I thought this because when i received the ball i was under pressure but still got the pass safely to another player and i did not possession. To improve i would do some passing drills to improve the quickness of my passing and do some practise on my long/drill pass, so i could turn defence to attack quickly.
Dribbling-4
Comment= I took the ball forward and had 1 good run but never looked dangerous
As a left back at our level its hard to get the ball and run with it, because as a defender your the last line of defenses if you lose it the opposition are through on goal. So i was cautious! I did make a couple of runs, 1 time i got tackled after taking on one player, And another was when i took on 2 players then passed it inside. To improve i would do more drills to improve my technique and to have more confidence in myself.

Heading-8
Comment=I cleared a couple balls off the line with headers saving the team from conceding.
I made alot of headers in the game because the other team made alot of long balls up-field. I made some crucial headers also, as a full back i was put on the post in the corners, twice i headed it into touch, one it was an inswinging corner and cleared it as i was on the post. the other i was on the back post and it went through everyone in the box and insted of it going out for a corner i cleared it for a throwing. To improve my heading i would just practise heading at different hights, but heading is one of the strong pionts of my game.

Tackling-7
Comment=I made a goal saving tackle, cleanly dispossessing the player, and overall i looked strong.
In the game i started quite weak, i missed some tackles. But as the game went on and after i made my first tackle i felt more confident. With the goal-saving tackle, the player was through, he fast so i ran fast to keep up with him, i also was the last man so i could not foul him otherwise my game was over.So i caught up with him then he gave me a glimpse of the ball then i stuck my foot in and cleanly won the ball the pased it out to the left midfielder. To improve my tackling i would just tackle more.

 Marking-6
Comment=Lost my man a couple of times.
This game was hard for marking because the right midfielder and the striker had gone over to me all the time leaving me with 2 men to mark, this left to 2 goals. Also the right midfielder was fast Making it hard to stick with him. But i did keep him quiet most of the game. I am not that good at marking and it is one of my weak pionts, so to improve this i will have to focus on this more times in training.
